Starting an E-Commerce Business Consider which Keywords you will Use

How many web sites and web pages exist today? This great question can only be answered by stating an approximate number at a particular time of a given day. Why is this? Because each second of each day brings thousands upon thousands of new web sites and with those web sites brings multiple thousands of new web pages.

This startling fact creates a dilemma for anyone wishing to produce and publish a web site, be it for profit or merely for informational purposes. What space will your web site occupy on the World Wide Web and will anyone notice it ever?

A quick search of some simple keywords on the powerhouse search engine Google on Sunday November 26, 2005 revealed some astonishing figures. Five searches were conducted using two keywords each. The following were the keywords used along with the number of results produced for those keywords:

Home Business 2,490,000,000
Classic Books 93,000,000
Bike Trails 6,360,000
Herb Gardens 2,290,000
Teany Towns 414

What do these results reveal? They reveal that the real estate space for any web site or web page that uses the keyword Home Business is incredibly small and anyone wanting some of this prime space will either, pay a handsome sum of money or will have to have a tremendous amount of luck, and I am not betting that luck will help.

The other point that is noticeable by just looking down the list of results is that there are not that many web pages for the search of the keywords Teeny Town Eureka, we have found keywords that can be used on our site or pages and will be instantaneously noticed. Really, not so fast, how many people do you know who will think to use the keywords, Teany Town. Keywords such as Teany Town that are non-generic are typically reserved for businesses or organizations whose names are just as unique as the keywords themselves.

So where do you go from here, is there any hope? There most certainly is hope. Just like any brick and mortar business today whose constant struggles are to brand oneself as a preferred provider of products and services, so to will your struggle and hope be found in creating a branded image for your site. As your brand grows, so too will your presence on the web and with that more traffic.

The business of the World Wide Web is essentially no different than that of the old world economy we are all accustomed. We are constantly striving to be innovative, creative and of value to the customers were serve.
